My Journey through Classic Thailand: A Tale of Culture, Cuisine, and Conservation
I recently returned from an extraordinary journey through Thailand on the Classic Thailand with Elephants tour. From vibrant cities to tranquil temples, this trip showcased the best of Thailand’s sights, sounds, and flavours, with unforgettable experiences along the way.
The adventure began in Bangkok, where the bustling flower markets and cultural sites set the stage. I had the chance to craft a Lotus flower and visit the iconic Grand Palace—a beautiful but bustling experience on the weekend! A sunset dinner at the River View Restaurant and Bar overlooking the Chao Phraya River provided a stunning view, while a night tuk-tuk ride around the palace captured Bangkok’s energy and charm.
One of my favourite stops was the lively Maeklong Railway Market, where local vendors expertly cleared their stalls as the train approached—an exciting sight for everyone! I also explored the Amphawa Floating Market, catching glimpses of life on the river and even spotting a monitor lizard swimming nearby. The tour continued with authentic Thai treats, including the famed mango sticky rice that left a lasting impression.
After Bangkok, Chiang Mai offered a refreshing change of pace. Despite recent flooding, the resilient locals warmly welcomed us, sharing insights into their lives and traditions. I loved spending time with a local Lanna family, learning to cook traditional dishes and hearing the stories behind their ancestral home. Visits to the Meo Hilltribe Village and the hilltop temple Wat Phra That Doi Suthep provided breathtaking views and vibrant gardens that showcased the region’s natural beauty.
A true highlight of my trip was the day spent at an ethical elephant sanctuary. There, I learned about conservation efforts, fed bananas to the gentle giants, and experienced the deep connection the sanctuary has with these remarkable animals.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m still delighted by Thailand’s diverse experiences and incredible cuisine. For anyone seeking a blend of cultural immersion, scenic landscapes, and meaningful interactions, I highly recommend this tour as the perfect introduction to Thailand.
