Japow Dreams With Club Med Kiroro Grand
There’s something magical about a Japanese winter—the crisp air, soft powder snow, and mountains blanketed in white. With Japan fast becoming one of the world’s most sought-after ski destinations, we finally decided to take the plunge and head to Sapporo for a family ski and snowboard trip.
With an 11-year-old snowboarder, an 18-year-old snowboarder, my husband (also a snowboarder), and me—an amateur skier—we wanted a destination that would suit all of us. Japan was the perfect choice.
Why Ski in Japan?
For Australians, a Japan ski holiday just makes sense. There’s only a two-hour time difference, so no brutal jet lag. The currency exchange is in our favour, making it a great-value destination for families. And of course, the real star of the show: Japow—the legendary Japanese powder snow that skiers and snowboarders dream about.
Landing in Sapporo & the Journey to Kiroro
After arriving at New Chitose Airport (CTS), we were met by a friendly Club Med representative just outside the arrivals hall. We had a short wait—about 45 minutes—before boarding our bus to Club Med Kiroro Grand. It was just our family and another, so we had plenty of space to stretch out, watch the snow-covered landscapes roll by, and even squeeze in a nap.
The drive to Kiroro felt like stepping into a snow globe—endless white mountains, charming Japanese towns, and that quiet magic of a winter’s day.
A Warm Welcome at Club Med Kiroro Grand
From the moment we arrived, the Club Med team made us feel at home. We were welcomed by Jay, whose energy and enthusiasm were infectious. He gave us a tour of the resort, helped us organise our ski gear, and explained how the ski and snowboard groups worked.
And honestly? This is where Club Med really shines.
Instead of spending half the day arguing about which runs to do (green, red, or black?), every family member could join a group suited to their skill level. No stress, no fighting—just pure skiing and snowboarding fun at our own pace.
A Typical Day on the Slopes
Life at Club Med Kiroro quickly settled into a beautiful rhythm:
7:00 AM – Wake up to breathtaking mountain views and head downstairs for a huge breakfast spread (think: freshly baked croissants, Japanese miso soup, eggs made to order, and endless coffee).
9:00 AM – Meet at the gondolas with our ski and snowboard groups. Whether beginner or advanced, everyone gets expert coaching to level up their skills.
12:00 PM – Lunch time! Club Med’s food selection is next-level—from sushi to ramen to hearty roast meats, every meal is an event.
1:00 PM – Afternoon ski session for those keen to hit the slopes again.
3:00 PM – Après-ski time. While my husband and kids still had energy to burn, I found my own slice of heaven—the onsen.
The Onsen Experience: A Must-Do in Japan
If there’s one thing you must do after a day on the slopes, it’s visit a Japanese onsen.
These natural hot spring baths are rich in minerals and famous for their healing properties. The experience is very traditional—you bathe nude (men and women separate), but once you get past the initial awkwardness, it’s pure relaxation.
Sitting in steaming water, watching the snowflakes fall outside? Absolute bliss.
For those not into onsens, Club Med also has a heated swimming pool, spa, and sauna—so there’s something for everyone. I treated myself to a massage at Club Med Spa by Mandara, and it was hands-down the best way to recover after a few tumbles on the slopes!
Evenings at Club Med: Family Fun & Entertainment
One thing I love about Club Med resorts is that the entertainment is actually fun. Every night, there were different performances—sometimes acrobatics, sometimes comedy, but always interactive and family-friendly. One of my favourite moments? My 11-year-old son getting up on stage to dance and sing! He had the best time, and as a mum, I loved seeing him gain confidence and have fun with new friends.
Our final night at Club Med was extra special—it was Chinese Lunar New Year, and the resort put on spectacular fireworks over the snow-covered landscape. A truly unforgettable way to end the trip.
Why Choose Club Med for a Family Ski Holiday?
If you’re thinking of skiing in Japan as a family, I can’t recommend Club Med Kiroro Grand enough. Here’s why:
✅ All-inclusive experience – No stressing about extra costs, meals, or lift passes—it’s all included.
✅ Expert instruction – Whether you’re a beginner or advanced, there’s always a pro to help you improve.
✅ No crowded slopes – Unlike Niseko or Hakuba, Kiroro is less busy but still has incredible snow.
✅ Perfect for families – Ski groups for all ages mean everyone gets the experience they want.
Exciting News for Aussie Skiers!
Japan’s popularity as a ski destination is booming, and Qantas has announced direct flights to Sapporo from December 2025—making it easier than ever for Aussies to experience Japow.
