Books That Inspire Us to Wander

During my recent travels, I found myself chatting with fellow travellers about where to explore next, and it was clear that books often spark our wanderlust in surprising ways. One traveller shared how her fascination with Iceland had begun with Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. Beyond Iceland’s hauntingly beautiful landscapes, it was the evocative storytelling in Kent’s novel that fuelled her desire to visit this unique land. It made me realise that many of our dream destinations start with a book that captures the heart of a place.

Let’s explore some timeless reads that have inspired travellers to explore the world:

Italy, India, and Indonesia – Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

For many, Elizabeth Gilbert's journey of self-discovery across three countries sparked an urge to do the same. Whether it's savouring the delicious cuisine of Italy, seeking peace in an Indian ashram, or soaking up the vibrant beauty of Bali, Eat, Pray, Love has led readers to travel in search of their own transformation.

South Africa – The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay

This powerful novel set in apartheid-era South Africa tells a story of hope, resilience, and unity. Readers are often drawn to experience South Africa’s natural beauty and cultural history, exploring places like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and the country's stunning national parks with a new perspective.

India – Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts

Shantaram paints a vibrant picture of India, especially Mumbai, with its bustling streets, vibrant colours, and hidden corners. For those enchanted by this tale of adventure and self-discovery, India becomes a place of intrigue, adventure, and human connection.

Scotland – Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon

The Outlander series transports readers (and now viewers) to the windswept landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, weaving romance, history, and mysticism into one unforgettable setting. Fans of Outlander are drawn to explore iconic Scottish sites like Culloden Battlefield, Edinburgh, and the rugged Highlands to walk in the footsteps of their favourite characters.

Egypt – Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie's thrilling mystery has brought countless readers to the banks of the Nile and into the heart of ancient Egyptian culture. From Cairo’s bustling bazaars to the temples of Luxor and the Great Pyramids, Egypt offers the intrigue and beauty that captivated Christie’s readers, making it a must-see for those drawn to the mystique of history.

Russia – A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

Although Russia is currently off-limits for many, A Gentleman in Moscow has sparked a fascination with Russian history and culture through the eyes of its charming protagonist. This novel, set in the luxurious confines of Moscow’s Metropol Hotel, beautifully captures the spirit of the Russian people and the splendour of old Moscow, inspiring readers to one day explore it for themselves.

The USA – On the Road by Jack Kerouac

Kerouac's classic captures the essence of the American road trip and the sense of freedom found on the open highway. Readers inspired by On the Road may find themselves yearning to drive across the United States, from the neon lights of Las Vegas to the iconic landscapes of the Great Plains and beyond.

London – Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

For those seeking a different view of London, Neverwhere offers a dark, fantastical journey through a hidden London below. Fans of Gaiman's work often find themselves intrigued by the city’s eclectic mix of ancient and modern, imagining hidden secrets around every corner.

Croatia – A Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martin (Inspiration for Game of Thrones)

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series enchanted readers long before it became the global phenomenon Game of Thrones. Much of the show’s filming took place across Croatia, particularly in Dubrovnik, which brought the fictional city of King's Landing to life. Although the TV series veered off on its own path in the final seasons, leaving some fans disappointed, the early seasons closely mirror Martin’s intricate storytelling and epic world. For fans of the books and show alike, Croatia’s medieval landscapes and walled cities continue to captivate and inspire.

Books have an uncanny way of bringing destinations to life, sparking a curiosity that leads us to explore the world through new perspectives. Whether you’re a classic book-in-hand reader, love the convenience of an e-reader, or are captivated by audiobooks on the go, the magic of storytelling fuels our wanderlust.

So, as you plan your next journey, consider diving into a new book (or pressing play on that audiobook!) — you may just find that your next adventure is waiting within its pages.
